China Mobile Deploys World First O-RAN Based 4G Indoor Distributed Base Station with Baicells
China Mobile deployed the first ever O-RAN based 4G indoor distributed base station in the world in JiangSu Province, paving the way to opening 5G networks and wireless RAN virtualization.
Recently, China Mobile Group Jiangsu Company working with the China Mobile Research Institute, deployed the first O-RAN based 4G indoor distributed base station in the world, marking a big step for the commercialization of virtualization-based open wireless networks.
O-RAN is an organization initiated by China Mobile, AT&T, Deutsche Telekom, NTT DOCOMO and Orange. Its members include 19 operators and over 45 IT/CT manufacturers. The organization is dedicated to bringing an environmentally-friendly, accessible, open and smart wireless access networks into reality. This initial trial was carried out in the Suzhou Mobile building and adopted a brand-new open network architecture design. Baicells’ baseband processing software was running on a General Purpose Processor (GPP) and based on Lenovo’s’ telecom-grade OpenStack and Kontron’s cloud server. The radio hardware was based on Baicells’ open reference design. The radio interference due to multiple bands and multiple interference sources was perfectly resolved using Baicells’ Cell Combining technology.
“This trial is characterized by its flexible deployment, plug & play nature, instant coverage and smart capacity extension. It matches the requirements for service and application diversification of future 5G networks. These innovations support network evolvement towards standardization, universalization, open-source and intelligent technologies while enabling Edge Computing (MEC) technology. Due to these factors, the CAPEX and OPEX for network operation can be reduced on a large scale.” Li Wang, Baicells OpenRAN & 5G Lead, said.
China Mobile 5G Innovation Center Jiangsu Open Lab will continue exploring and implementing innovations based on the Openstack cloud platform via splitting the control node and computing node, deploying MEC services, introducing vertical applications via an open AP and upgrading from a CT network to an ICT fusion network.
